My Birthday
Today is my birthday! The kids all think I am 29… again.
Well they used to believe I was 29. It been getting harder and harder to pull
off! (You’d think with 16 years of practice it would get easier!)
So for this blog I thought I’d tell a couple birth stories from
my own past. The first was when my parents headed to the hospital to give birth
to me. It was around 10:30 PM when Mom’s water broke. So Dad did the whole ‘new
Dad thing’ and ran around like a crazy person panicking. Mom was pretty calm. They got the suitcase and the stuff Mom
had planned to take to the hospital and Dad whisked them out the door. Dad
broke a couple speed limits but obeyed all other traffic laws and they reached
the hospital in about 20 minutes.
Dad pulled in front of the main door and Mom put her hand on his arm
before he could jump out to open her door (They still did that back
then). She told him to park the car. He was confused but listened.
Once they were parked she asked him what time it was. He told her it just after
11:00 PM. She sat back in the car and rested her eyes. Dad was confused. He
asked if something was wrong. She had a contraction then told him if they went
in before midnight they would be charged for a whole day. She wanted to be
close in case there was an emergency, but not go in and be charged for the
whole day. Mom and Dad walked into the Maternity ward at 12:09 on June 9th,
1967…. I was born just before 3 AM on the 9th. When they got the bill, Mom made sure there were no charges for June 8th.
I am the oldest in our family and Mom was the youngest child
in hers. She did not do much babysitting and was not really ready to be
completely in charge of a newborn. It was a big deal when she brought me home
from the hospital. She held me the whole way as Dad drove us to the house (no
seatbelts or car seats back then). Dad jumped out of the car and ran around to
open Mom’s door to help her out. All four of my new Grandparents were watching
from the big picture window inside the house. My parents walked proudly up the
walk, smiling at my Grandparents as they waved and smiled back from inside the
house. Dad opened the screen door for Mom and she walked through the threshold.
Unfortunately, she was holding me with my head a little farther out than her
arm, so as she went in my head smacked against the door frame. The thump
surprised all my grandparents but Mom swore I never even cried. (I was probably
stunned!) My Grandma N. decided then and there that she was moving into the
house for 2 weeks to help Mom care for me. I still have the dent in my head
from the door jam! :)
My Grandmother stayed at our house for a couple weeks to help my Mom. I was a summer baby and we spent lots of time outside enjoying the sunshine. One evening when I was only a couple weeks old, there was a chill in the air. Grandma asked my Dad to bring out a pair of socks because my feet felt cold. He brought out a pair of his socks. My Grandmother put them on me all the way up my legs to where my diaper started and there was still several inches dangling below my toes. She rolled them up and told my parents I had "Pixie shoes" She has called me Pixie ever since. :)

Fortune Cookies
Our tradition has been to let the kids pick a place to go out to dinner for their birthday. Dori always chooses seafood, Macy likes Italian and the boys usually pick Chinese. A new Chinese restaurant opened up at about the halfway point between the guy’s house and ours so we go there quite a bit. Since we are a pretty big family and need to pull 2 tables together when we come in we are pretty well known there. Once we were there for Dill’s birthday and the hostess noticed that it was a special occasion (probably because we had gifts and sang the happy birthday song to him off key!) She came over and asked Dill how old he was. Then he told her how much he loved coming there to celebrate. He wore a huge smile and ate the whole dinner (always chicken and broccoli) and the woman seemed to enjoy talking to him every time she walked by. (Everyone is always amazed at how much soup and Chinese food that boy can consume… he is always insulted when anyone asks if wants kid-sized portions)
At the end of the meal, the hostess came over with a large bag that was stapled closed and gave it to Dill. He opened the bag and inside it was stuffed with fortune cookies. You would have thought she gave him gold! It was his favorite present and I am sure he can’t remember any of the gifts that the family spent time finding, buying, wrapping and bringing for him…. But he will remember those cookies.
As we walked out, Dill was beaming and gave the hostess an uncharacteristic hug and thanked her again. I commented that it was a very nice thing for him to do and he stepped into the parking lot, turned to me and said, “Just workin’ the charm, Mom.” Oy!

Dill's Birthday morning
I've blogged before about our family tradition of waking our children up early on the morning of their birthday and giving them a gift. Here is our celebration for Dill's 9th birthday.... in pictures.
Dill in the last second before waking up to his whole family standing in his bedroom...

Dill grimacing during the family singing ♫♫♪♪♫ Happy Birthday to you!! ♫♫♪♪♫ (off key)

Showing a little excitement when he sees the word "TOY" on the bag...

Not overly thrilled about the new game in the bag...

Celebration is over....

P.S. .... The game Treasure island actually ended up being a favorite of Dill's. We've played it LOTS at our house since that morning!! :)

Family Party
Had a big family party at the house today to celebrate January birthdays. Dill and Kiwi had more celebrations... and gifts. Pepper did not think her parents were coming. Dad hurt his back and was not feeling well, but Mom called this morning and said they were going to make it. Pete had a friend over and Dori's boyfriend and Mom were here. Dad D's parents and sister came with her kids. Uncle K and Aunt L came. Pepper's brother and partner was here... So there were lots of people at the house.
Couple funny stories....
Kiwi and Dill were standing in the kitchen with the cake. Everyone was gathered waiting for the candles to be lit. Aunt L lit Dill's pretty quickly... he had 7. But Kiwi's 17 candles took a little more effort to light. She had just finished lighting all the candles and said "Ok, all set" meaning that we could all start singing "Happy Birthday" Kiwi thought Aunt L meant it was ok to blow them out.... so she did. Aunt L's face was priceless when she realized she was going to have to re-light all the candles! (Dill blew his out too once Kiwi did!!)
Dori's boyfriend Ned and Ned's Mom came to the party. Once they left Uncle K said that Dori needed to thank him because he did not scare Ned. (He teasing told everyone that he was going to say that if Ned hurt Dori he wasn't afraid to GO BACK to prison) Dori said, "Ned doesn't scare easily." Uncle K came back quickly with "Obviously, he is dating you!!"
The party was very nice. Dad D made a great cake with Mario and Yoshi racing around on it. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves... even if they loved picking on me about our chilly, drafty house. (Dad D's sister had to show everyone she was wearing long underwear and two pairs of socks!!) Next year we should celebrate January birthday's in August... of course they will all still complain because we don't have air conditioning!! :)

Kiwi's Birthday
Today we celebrated Kiwi's 17th birthday. She doesn't really turn 17 until Wednesday, but we took her out to dinner tonight. The weather was horrible.... we drove s-l-o-w-l-y all the way to Monroe in 4 wheel drive. Cars were slipping and sliding... but slowly and steadily we made it.
The highlights..... Kiwi loved her new Nintendo DS system we gave her and shared her huge 'death by chocolate' cake dessert that the manager gave her special to celebrate her day (plus we were a HUGE group, so I am sure he felt it was ok to comp it!), all the kids enjoyed the trivia and Texas Hold'em games, Dad B salivated over the giant screen TV's and was trying to mentally rearrange furniture to fit one in his house. Pete is very good at Texas Hold'em but needs to work on his poker face. Dori and Macy are both pretty good at trivia (read: they beat Pepper and I!!) Dill was sleepy and got his gum stuck in his hair on the way home. I actually ate ribs--- with my fingers! I hate finger picky-up, messy food... but I did it. I left my fork on the table! Anyone who knows me knows this is very un-me. Dinner was good though, we all had a very nice time.
Also had a snowball fight with the boys. Pepper and I against Dill and Pete. We won, but barely! Next year we are in trouble. Both boys have very good aim!!
All the girls went to the mall with their friends, they are SUCH TEENAGERS!! But they had a nice time and went to all the "cool" stores that Pepper and I usually try to avoid when we are at the mall. The highlight was that they all got along pretty well, even Dori and Macy (small miracle!!) and said it was a fun day.

Happy 13th Macy!
We started the morning by singing to Macy. We have done this since the girls came to live with us. This tradition was a great plan when we first started it. Before the girls started school, Pepper and I would slip into the girls room and wake them up with our singing. We weren't that good or anything, but it made the birthday girl feel special and we always had a gift with us for opening in bed. It was just natural that we continue the early morning tradition after the boys were born. Nowadays, I have to say, it is not as charming a tradition as it originally was. Once Dori started middle school and had to be on the bus before the sun was up... we started to feel the strain. Now it is a bit of a battle to get the non-birthday children up to sing... Pepper and I have to be part cheerleader and part drill sergeant. But this morning, everyone was up without to much complaining and the singing... although still lame, included the entire household.
Macy was quite amusing when she opened her gift. She opened the card then ripped into the gift. We always make sure the gift is wrapped in birthday paper and we are never allowed to 'double gift' which is to present something as a birthday "slash" Christmas gift. Pepper's Mom has a December birthday too and we learned long ago that those were serious faux pas for anyone with a December birthday. So she ripped into her gift... which was Jones soda and dark chocolate (two things Macy loves but we try to limit how much she has) she was thanking us and hugging her soda and we had to tell her to search a little more in the box. We also included an envelope with a $100 bill inside. Her eyes lit up as soon as she saw old Ben Franklin's face peeking out. She has wanted to do some clothes shopping, so we thought we'd give her some money for that. She asked to have her picture taken with the money... cash is another of her favorite things!!
Uncle K stopped by to plow the driveway again today. We will definitely have a white Christmas this year!! Sounds like tomorrow will be hectic. We have three relatives to visit before the church pageant rehearsal at 2:45, then pageant at 4 and Christmas Eve candlelight service at 9. Dad B and Dad D will spend the night over Christmas eve so they will be here to watch the kids open gifts in the morning, then we will go to Pepper's parents for an early dinner on Christmas day and back home to meet my sister, LM and her family. They will be staying at our house for a couple nights. It is hectic having so many relatives to visit, sometimes it is overwhelming to try to get everywhere-- but our kids have so many people in their lives that love them.... we really are all very blessed.
Thanks for reading and happy holidays!!
